The arc

The Chapters

Eight chapters. Twenty-three days. Each day, a card. Some will hold an essay. Some, only a photograph of Clay asleep on hotel tiles. Both are right.

The Arrival

Rovinj · Days 3–5

The first true exhale. The holiday lands in the body.

  1. Rovinj
    Day 03Sun, June 14, 2026

    The Real Arrival

    Rovinj · Istrian coast

Yesterday was the road and the salt. Today is the first morning that belongs to nowhere else. Coffee on the deck, oaks above, the bay through the trees. The little boat across to the old town when you feel like it — not before. Clay sleeps on the wood. The holiday actually begins here.

  2. Rovinj → Lim Fjord → Rovinj
    Day 04Mon, June 15, 2026

    The Green Mouth

Rovinj → Lim Fjord → Rovinj · the oyster pontoon

Twenty minutes inland, the sea narrows into a long green corridor between karst hills — the Lim Fjord. Wooden pontoons sit on the water like quiet animals. You eat oysters opened in front of you, drink cold malvazija, throw the shells back into the place they came from. Clay drinks from a metal bowl in the shade. Back at Amarin by three, the afternoon still long.

  3. Rovinj → Crveni Otok → Rovinj
    Day 05Tue, June 16, 2026

    Red Island Morning

Rovinj → Crveni Otok → Rovinj · the morning boat to Red Island

Eight in the morning, the small boat from Rovinj harbour. Twenty minutes out — pine, white stone, the water unbelievably clear. A cove on the back side, away from the day-trippers. Clay rides on the bow with his ears blown back. Swim, sit, swim again. Back on the noon boat, hair still salt. Long lunch in the old town. Afternoon: nothing.
