The shape of the day
The first day is mostly motion. Out of Uitikon at 03:33, through the silent Gotthard, down into the warmth of Lombardy. By late afternoon the car parks at Hotel Caribe in Brenzone sul Garda — a low, simple lakeside hotel on the east shore. Pool. Lake. Bed.
What to do
- 01Coffee at the Gotthard tunnel exit, before the south truly begins.
- 02First swim of the trip — straight off the hotel into Lake Garda, water still cold, body still northern.
- 03An aperitivo on the Brenzone lakefront, watching the light leave the mountains across the water.
A loose rhythm
- 03:33Departure. The ritual hour. Empty roads, Clay asleep on the back seat.
- 07:00Breakfast somewhere on the Italian side of the Alps.
- MiddayLight lunch. Keep moving.
- Late afternoonCheck in at Hotel Caribe. Drop bags. Pool, then the lake.

Why this day
This day exists to create distance — geographic, but mostly psychological. The country has to change before the body can. Garda is the first stranger; the hotel is just a bed and a pool. That's enough.
How it will feel
Tired in the right way. The kind of tired that proves you actually left.
